If 2020 has taught us anything, it is the power and vitality of social media. From the growth and explosion of TikTok to brand transparency on social media, there is no doubt that social media is your key to success in 2021. Let’s explore some trends coming our way in the next year.
It is clear that videos are not only growing in popularity but being consumed in bite-sized portions. TikTok has changed the game on videos and creating eye-catching and easy to digest content will continue to reign supreme over the next year. Not only have short videos taken off in a big way, but going live has become the norm. Businesses have had to pivot to stay relevant in a digital world in 2020, so going live and giving consumers the “in-person” experience from home has been and will continue to be huge in 2021.
Along with these videos is a surge of “remixing.” People are recreating content they like. This concept is also known as user-generated content but is an excellent way for your brand to gain traction and attention. Just look at the various challenges on TikTok being shared and recreated. Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice and Fleetwood Mac saw dramatic increases in exposure, conversations, and sales because of one video that went viral and was remixed millions of times.
Another trend that is going to continue into the new year is, as HubSpot (2020) put it, the 4 Cs’. The 4 C’s are community, contactless, cleanliness, and compassion. These are at the forefront of everyone’s mind when choosing who to do business with this year and next. Including these 4 C’s into your strategy over the next year will bode well for your relevance and overall success on social media.
The final and most important trend on social media for 2021 is social consciousness. The next generation has made it clear that they are socially aware and expect the brands they support to be conscious and transparent about sensitive topics. From politics to mental health to equality, Gen Z and Alpha want to know where you and your business stand. Although these are scary topics to many older business owners and likely seen as taboo, the generations who will soon be doing most of the buying demand transparency.
